CHAPTER NINETEEN
Cole parked her car a block away from the Greenfield Community College, absently watching as throngs of students weaved around the campus carrying loaded book bags, immersed in their own thoughts.
They probably have no idea about the murders, Cole thought. No idea there could be a shark in their midst.
It was late afternoon, just before five, and classes were beginning to wrap up for the day. Students poured out of the college buildings, chatting and laughing, blissfully ignorant of the danger that could potentially lurk amongst them.
She got out of her car and approached the aging building that held Marcus Leónâs office, according to the college directory sheâd found online. Along the way, she texted Callaway for the second time to explain where she was and what she was doing. Thus far she hadnât heard back from him, which made her a little uneasy.
Heâs probably just busy, she told herself. Besides, you know how old-fashioned he is. Phones are almost an enigma to him.
And yet, a nagging worry persisted.
The building was old, probably as old as the college itself. The thinning paint on its façade crumbled in patches, hinting at the age-old tales the structure held and testifying to decades of service and neglect. Its windows looked out blankly onto the brick-laid walkway like eyes that had beheld too many tales of comings and goings, triumphs and failures.
She entered through the heavy wooden door, its aged oak groaning under the weight of countless years. The smell of old ink and paper greeted her, a familiar scent that was both comforting and invigorating. She navigated through a series of dimly lit corridors, glancing around at the peeling paint and warped floorboards. This place needed more attention than it was getting, but she figured that wasn't her problem.
Cole finally reached the office she was looking for, Room 217. The name "Prof. Marcus León" was imprinted on the metallic nameplate next to the door. She knocked, heard a faint "Come in," and pushed open the door.
The office turned out to be just as she had imagined it: stuffed with heaps of books stacked on every available surface, a chaos of papers sprawled across a worn-out wooden desk, and ancient artifacts adorning dusty shelves. In the midst of all this disorder sat a man who seemed to be an integral part of the clutter around him.
Marcus León.
León was a lanky figure, clad in worn-out jeans and a faded plaid shirt. His silver hair was combed back, revealing a high forehead adorned with deep lines of thought. His eyes were a sharp blue, the color of steel under the afternoon sunlight filtering in from the window. He looked up from his work, spectacles perched low on his nose, and his sharp gaze instantly softened into a welcoming smile.
"May I help you?" he asked.
"I hope so," Cole replied, showing her badge. His eyes flicked to it and then back up to her face. "I'm Agent Harley Cole. I have a few questions for you about some recent events.
